This 4-week course is designed to equip farmers and agricultural entrepreneurs with essential marketing skills to grow their businesses and reach new customers. Participants will explore the fundamentals of marketing with a focus on practical strategies tailored to the agricultural industry.

Topics include branding, customer recognition, digital marketing, and product display, with an emphasis on modern marketing techniques such as social media outreach. Additionally, the course will cover the importance of product labels, farm-to-table storytelling, and how to position products to stand out in competitive markets.

Day 1: Knowing Your Customer & Marketing Basics

Topic: Introduction to marketing fundamentals, identifying and understanding your customer.
About Rasheal: A 2018 graduate of the Beginning Farmer Training Program and former incubator farmer at Wildgust Farm (Lake Washington), Rasheal brings the dual perspective of farmer and marketing professional. She currently works at a marketing firm where she’s advanced into a leadership role. Rasheal markets dried medicinal herbs, flowers, and vegetables through online platforms, farmers markets, and has sold wholesale to outlets like Nugget Market.

Day 2: Website & Email Marketing

Instructor:
Dan Poggetti
Topic: Tools and strategies for building your digital presence, including websites and email campaigns.
About Dan: Dan is the Development and Engagement Manager at the Center for Land-Based Learning with over 12 years of experience in marketing, communications, and event management. He specializes in building relationships and developing campaigns that support education and workforce development.

Day 3: Mission, Values & Branding Through Storytelling

Instructor: Christine Calvin
Topic: Clarifying your farm’s mission and values and crafting a brand through effective storytelling.
About Christine: Christine owns Killdeer Farms in West Sacramento and is the Senior Manager of Member Communications at Golden 1 Credit Union. With over 15 years of experience in business reporting, nonprofit marketing, and brand development, Christine brings deep expertise in building brand identity and communicating value across platforms.

Day 4: Alternative Marketing Channels (Wholesale & Restaurant Sales)

Susie Sutphin
Topic: Exploring alternative sales channels including wholesale, restaurant partnerships, and food hubs.
About Susie : Susie is the Community Food Program Manager at the Center for Land-Based Learning. She founded Tahoe Food Hub and served as Executive Director for 10 years, building a network of 50 regional farms to connect local food with restaurants and consumers. Her background includes 25+ years in marketing with companies like Patagonia and Couloir Magazine, and experience in nonprofit and event management.
